Description

Flash floods, storm surge, coastal erosion, and hurricanes--these are all familiar terms to those of us living in northwest Florida.  When homes are damaged by any of the natural phenomena listed, we rely on flood insurance to help us rebuild.

Established in 1968 and constantly evolving, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) has been an important part of floodplain management for almost half a century. Still, the challenges faced by the NFIP and those that it insures remain daunting. The NFIP is especially important to Florida as we have 40% of the NFIP's policies. Recent legislation in 2012 and 2014 have made significant changes to the way flood insurance will be handled in coastal and inland flood zones, with concern by many of significant rate increases.

Join us on Wednesday, April 23 from 10:00-11:30 am at the Escambia Central Office Complex (3363 W. Park Place) or that evening from 6:00-7:30 pm at the Navarre Visitor Information Center (8543 Navarre Parkway) to hear Coastal Planning Specialist and attorney Thomas Ruppert discuss the latest impacts of changes to this program.

An informational flyer is located at http://escambia.ifas.ufl.edu/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/LivingCoastal2014.pdf

Both workshops are free and open to the public.  If you have questions, contact Carrie Stevenson at 850-475-5230 or ctsteven@ufl.edu
